Ill get the comparisons to the original out of the way right now. Jaden Smith is no Ralph Macchio, but that’s a good thing. Ralph in the 1984 Karate Kid always annoyed me even though I love the movie. The story in this movie is almost the exact same is the 1984 version. Kid gets bullied by kids at dojo, finds unlikely mentor, enters tournament to prove he is better than they are. Oh and there is no Karate in this movie the name was used to cash in on nostalgia, and to use brand recognition. It should have been called The Kung Fu Kid. Now im just nitpicking. Oh, and its set in China, not California
The acting in this movie is very good. Jaden Smith plays the part very well and I do want to see him in more movies. This is probably Jackie Chan’s best American role since… I cant remember when actually (Rumble in the Bronx?) and he is a great substitute for Mr Miyagi. The only person that bugged me was the Mom. I think they could have done a little better with her character.
Overall this is a good, not great movie. It’s fun, has more than decent acting, and is a good reboot to the franchise. (although I still wish it were called the Kung Fu Kid)
